We're currently in Dublin, Ireland for work purposes and with toddler in tow. Both Colin and I are collaborating with researchers at DIAS (the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies) and also in my case, UCD (University College Dublin), and so braved the transatlantic journey with Sam in order to help advance some of our projects (my travels have been graciously funded by the Irish Newfoundland Partnership and I thank them profusely). Naturally, pushing forth the boundaries of science with an almost two-year-old along for the ride offers a range of challenges but thanks to Sam's easygoing nature and curiosity, it's all gone remarkably smoothly. Tag-team parenting has allowed each of us to enjoy some parent-child one on one time while allowing us both to arrange all our necessary meetings and seminars. We're lodged in a self-catering apartment smack dab in the centre of the city which has been fantastic for access to shops and to great parks like Saint Stephen's Green and Merrion Square Park (and associated playgrounds). With no science to do on the weekend, today we rented a car and headed down to Powerscourt Estate with its beautiful gardens and breathtaking waterfall (the highest in Ireland). Colin's eagle eyes picked up that the palatial house at Powerscourt was featured in the movie The Count of Monte Cristo! We're off to the zoo tomorrow and then to a BBQ with some of my old friends from McGill who live just north of Dublin in a town called Navan. After that, one more day of science, one more day of sightseeing and then we're off to Scotland for a family holiday. All in all, we're having a lovely time and are thankful that science has given us this excuse to visit Ireland as a family. :)
