Brrr. There's a chill in the air this morning and frost on the ground. Fall (read Autumn) is definitely in full swing and winter is right around the corner. Despite the shorter days and more variable weather, this is generally my favourite time of year. I love the changing colours on the trees, the need for sweaters and the crackling leaves beneath my feet. My son, as it turns out, enjoys this time of year as well but for slightly different reasons. These include, but are not limited to, lots of puddles and sparsely populated playgrounds. We found a particularly good example of the latter on the way to Middle Cove Beach a few weeks ago. In addition to the amazing playground equipment (see below), they also had a massive soccer pitch, a baseball diamond and enough tennis/basketball courts to host a tournament. After becoming saturated with swings and slides, Sam moved on to the courts and ran around for ages following the lines and jumping in the puddles. The following video resulted. As you can see, Colin got carried away too.
With the changing leaves, going for walks along the many trails in St. John's offers some striking panoramas. We're going to try to take advantage of going for as many walks as possible before snow starts to fill the paths. We figure we have about two months before that happens. We enjoyed a really nice walk this past Canadian Thanksgiving weekend and Colin and I had a hard time keeping up with our little man. As you can hear in the video below, he says "Gonna go and see Grandma". We're not too sure where he got the idea that the walk would lead to Grandma but it certainly helped put a spring in his step and he wasn't the least bit perturbed when the walk was completed and she was nowhere to be found. We'll make it up to him this weekend though. Grandma will be arriving for a four day visit tomorrow so we'll try to get the two of them out for a stroll or else put them to work raking up leaves!
